How does a search engine work?
How does a search engine work?
The basic outline of what all people know:
When a person wants to find something, they type in a word or a phrase this is called a search query
Then search engine compares that query to its catalog of web pages pulling out the best matches to show the searcher these are displayed on a Search Engine Result Page (SERP)
A search engine's goal is to create the most relevant list of results possible to help searchers find what they are looking for.
The result page will mainly show links to the websites but you might also see stuff like local business listing items for sale, ads, images, maps, videos, and lots more
Here comes the main part of the blog
How do search engines find the pages?
Search engines perform 3basic tasks
- First, they examine the content they learn about and have permission to see: This is called Crawling
- Second, they categorize each piece of content, that's called Indexing
- Third, they decide which content is useful and ranks them
Crawling
- Search engines crawl the internet to discover the content, (Crawlers, bots, spiders - which is short for robots)
- The bots hop from page to page by following links to other pages
- They never stop, their sole purpose is to visit and revisit pages looking for new links and new content to include in the index
Indexing
- The index is the giant list of all the web pages and content found by the bots
- Search engines use this index as a source of information displayed on the search engine result pages, but not everything found by the bot makes it into the search engine's index
- Search engines may find multiple copies of the exact same content on different websites, in this case, search engines consider only the pages with high authority to display at top positions
- Pages makes to search engine index only after the search engine determines what they are about
The final outcome will be decided by the bots about what rank a website gets
However, you can perform some optimizations to increase your rankingsCheck this blog to know what is Search Engine Optimization
